TAFFS WELL, WITH A BYE IN THE SWALEC BOWL, REARRANGED A LEAGUE GAME AGAINST
BLAINA, AND RECORDED THEIR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON WITH AN EIGHT TRY VICTORY.
COACHES KEITH JAMES AND RHYS BLOMBERG HAVE WORKED HARD WITH A YOUNG SQUAD OF
MAINLY EX YOUTH PLAYERS, RECEIVING A BOOST WITH THE RETURN OF SEAN BELLION,
DUFRIG REES, STEVE DANDO, AND DARYL MOTA TO THE CLUB. BLAINA, ALTHOUGH
STRUGGLING ARRIVED WITH A BIG EXPERIENCED SIDE, BUT TAFFS WELL SOON BEGAN TO
FIND THE GAPS IN THEIR DEFENCE AND THE TRIES STARTED TO FLOW. EIGHT TRIES IN
TOTAL WITH CENTRE LIAM WARD CROSSING FOR THREE, WITH TWO FROM ANDREW INGRAM, AND
ONE A PIECE FOR RYAN SMITH SAM HARRIS, AND SEAN BELLION, WHILE DARYL MOTA PUT
OVER FOUR CONVERSIONS AND TWO PENALTY GOALS, FOR A BONUS POINT VICTORY OF 54-12.
THE VISITORS NEVER GAVE UP AND WERE REWARDED WITH TRIES FROM PAUL BAXTER AND
MARTIN PAGETT, WITH A CONVERSION FROM CIERON PRICE. THIS ALL IMPORTANT FIRST WIN
WILL GIVE THE SIDE CONFIDENCE, WITH CHEPSTOW AT HOME NEXT SATURDAY. |

TAFFS WELL 25-CHEPSTOW 25
AFTER THEIR FIRST WIN LAST
WEEK, HOPES WERE HIGH THAT TAFFS WELL COULD CONTINUE TO BUILD ON THEIR GOOD
PERFORMANCE, AGAINST CHEPSTOW AT HOME, BUT ALTHOUGH DYFRIG REES AND HIS SIDE
WORKED HARD THEY WERE HELD TO A 25-25 DRAW. CHEPSTOW WERE THE FIRST TO SCORE A
TRY, AND IN AN OPEN GAME THE LEAD CHANGED HANDS SEVERAL TIMES AS BOTH TEAMS
SCORED FOUR TRIES, AND ALTHOUGH A DRAW WAS A FAIR RESULT EITHER SIDE COULD HAVE
PINCHED IT TAFFS WELL TRIES CAME FROM ANDREW INGRAM SAM HARRIS BRADLEY JAMES,
AND MAN OF THE MATCH PROP JOHN LEAK, WITH REPLACEMENT FULLBACK JAMIE FIELD
ADDING ONE PENALTY GOAL, AND A CONVERSION. STEVE DANDO, CHRIS TOTTLE, AND SEAN
BELLION ALL PLAYED WELL. WITH SO MANY YOUNG PLAYERS PLAYING THEIR FIRST SEASON
IN SENIOR RUGBY IT WAS ALWAYS GOING TO TAKE COACHES KEITH JAMES AND RHYS
BLUMBERG TIME TO GEL THE TEAM, BUT THEY CAN NOW SEE THE PERFORMANCES STARTING TO
GET BETTER AS THE PLAYERS GET ADJUSTED TO SENIOR RUGBY.
NEW TREDEGAR 24 TAFFS WELL
17
AFTER A COUPLE OF GOOD
RESULTS THERE WERE HIGH HOPES AS TAFFS WELL TRAVELLED TO NEW TREDEGAR, BUT THE
HOME SIDE PROVED JUST A LITTLE TO STRONG, RUNNING OUT WINNERS 24-17.
DARYL MOTA, WHO HAD A GOOD
ALL ROUND GAME SCORED HIS SIDES ONLY FIRST HALF POINTS WITH A PENALTY GOAL,
WHILE THE HOME SIDE CROSSED FOR A COUPLE OF TRIES. THE SECOND PERIOD SAW TAFFS
WELL GET MORE INTO THE GAME AS YOUNG FULLBACK CHRIS TOTTLE, AND WING KRISTIAN
NICHOLAS SCORED TRIES, BOTH CONVERTED BY DARYL MOTA, BUT THE HOME SIDE HIT BACK
WITH TWO FURTHER TRIES TO RAP UP THE POINTS, ALTHOUGH THERE WAS A LOSING BONUS
POINT FOR THE VISITORS. CAPTAIN DYFRIG REES WORKED HARD TO INSPIRE HIS YOUNG
CHARGES, AND THERE WAS ANOTHER GOOD PERFORMANCE FROM LUKE JOHN, BUT WITH
SO MANY YOUNGSTERS WITH LITTLE EXPERIENCE OF SENIOR RUGBY, COACHES KEITH
JAMES, AND RHYS BLUMBERG WILL NEED TO KEEP WORKING HARD IN TRAINING BEFORE THEY
START TO SEE IMPROVMENTS IN THEIR PERFORMANCE.
THE STORY OF THE SECOND XV
WIN AT PONTYCLUN WAS THE PERFORMANCE OF FATHER AND SON, KELVIN AND ELLIOTT
SHORTE. KELVIN, WHO IS ALSO A W.R.U. REFEREE SPRINTED FORTY METRES TO SCORE A
TRY, AND PUT OVER TWO CONVERSIONS AND A PENALTY GOAL,WHILE SON ELLIOTT ,WHO IS
STILL PLAYING YOUTH RUGBY PUT IN A BIG PERFORMANCE. ADAM CHOWN WAS THE OTHER TRY
SCORES AS TAFFS WELL RAN OUT WINNERS 17-14.
taffs well
15 barry 22
taffs well played
barry at home in the second round of the swalec bowl hoping to build on recent
good performances, but it was the visitors who had the best of the early
exchanges, going ahead with a penalty goal , and then they scored two tries, one
converted . in between new recruit kieron dymond kept taffs well in the game
with three penalty goals , for a half time score of 15-9 to barry. a further
barry try just after the break looked to put the visitors in a match winning
position ,but the home side rallied ,with oliver smith going over for a try ,
superbly converted by dymond from the touchline, and then taffs well pushed hard
for another score , but barry held out to book their place in round three of the
bowl. alongside outside half kieron dymond , was his brother phil ,also making
his club debut, with both players doing enough to suggest they will be good
additions to the squad. prop craig
gane made a welcome return to the side, while chris tottle at fullback enjoyed a
good game, as did cristain nicholas on the wing.
taffs well 11
talywain 15
there are signs of
improvement at taffs well, with the young side becoming more competitive,
and although they have lost eight of
their ten league games , they have finished within seven points on six
occasions. the team is starting to believe in themselves and this was evident
again against top of the division talywain.
taffs well took the lead with a try from oliver smith ,followed by a
penalty goal from cieron dymond , but the visitors hit back just before half
time with a try of their own, leaving taffs well ahead 8-5 at the break .
taffs well increased their lead after fifteen minutes of
the second period with a well taken drop goal ,from fullback chris tottle ,and
at this point it looked like the home side would hold out for a surprise win
against one of the best sides in the division. as time went on and with
taffs well still leading 11-5 it
took a fortuitous try from talywain to get themselves back in the game . at a
lineout close to the taffs well line the ball deflected of a taffs well player
towards the goal line and a talywain player was quickest to react, pouncing
on the loose ball to score in the corner, and an excellent conversion put
them one point in front , this was followed by a penalty goal from talywain in
the last minute to denied taffs well and sent the leaders home reflecting on
their lucky escape. coaches keith
james ,and rhys bloomburg have done a great job working with what is basically a
young side , players likes of myles evans, who was only playing in the first
team for the second time showed great maturity, and there is a feeling of better
times around the corner
